Dear Parents:
Welcome to St. Margaret’s Episcopal School (SMES)! SMES was founded in 1983 as an MDO program meeting only two days a week. It has since grown into the school we have today, meeting the needs of our families with options up to full-time 5 days a week. We pride ourselves on continuing to provide a warm, secure and loving Christian environment for toddlers, preschoolers and Pre-Kindergarten. At SMES we believe children learn best by doing. Our program practices are conducted using developmentally age-appropriate techniques with a play-based learning environment. Developmentally Appropriate Practices (DAP) is research based and supported by the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC). These methods are carried out in a secure environment where children are accepted as individuals, made in God’s image, with individual needs. I invite you to join our family and discover the power of learning through play and the deep rich culture of our school.
Blessing,
Helen Knight
School Director
Children experience rich and meaningful learning when they play. Importantly, it is through play that children develop critical thinking, perspective taking, and essential social skills. Some forms of play specifically enable children to explore mathematical concepts such as quantity and measurement, while other forms of play build language skills for speaking and listening, as well as practice inquiry and, with teacher guidance, apply the scientific method and basic engineering principles. Children also develop their creativity, innovative skills, and confidence through structured and guided play.
To serve God, we the people of St. Margaret’s Church, empowered by the Holy Spirit, come together to reach out in faith and love to all people with the Good News of God’s reconciling Grace in Jesus Christ. We do this through our worship, nurture, and outreach.
